Ah, now you make me feel guilty for being pleased that Carol Ann Duffy has become the first ever female Poet Laureate. I have seen her read more than once (in the days when I used to associate a lot with poets and hence attended several poetry readings) and I don't remember finding her particularly trite. I think of her as funny, accessible and often using complicated rhyming and non-rhyming structures. Mind you, I haven't read any of her work for years so I could be completely wrong.
