Vintage Knickers

Readers of a sensitive disposition may need to avert your eyes in a moment.

As I've mentioned before, I have lived in this house, on and off, since I was three, and so there are very many - er - treasures from the past.

And today I found a rather unusual such treasure.

The secondary school which I attended, Roundhay High School for Girls, was a girls' grammar school. Next door was a boys' grammar school called Roundhay School.

The boys were seen as a threat. They were, apparently, lecherous brutes who would get a girl pregnant within a very short time of meeting her. We needed to be kept away from them.

The Women of a Certain Age who were in charge of the girls' school tried to achieve this in two ways:

The first way was that the start and finish times of the girls' school and the boys' school were different, in the hope that the boys and the girls would never, ever meet each other.

But, just in case such a dangerous encounter should ever happen, we girls were made to wear protective clothing.

And here it is:

Made of thick blue cotton, they came up to somewhere near your armpits. Heaven help any boy brave enough to get as far as these! The idea was that he would flee in terror, all passion suddenly gone. And indeed, these exciting garments were known to all as "passion-killers".

I do remember one girl suddenly disappearing from school for a while and then turning up at again with a baby in her arms.

It was clear to all that she'd been wearing non-school-uniform knickers.

Ohhhhh I've come over all hot and bothered now !

Yes those pre (Boer) war nether garments would certainly work as last ditch contraceptives at any girl's school. Going to an all boys school as I did, I obviously knew nothing about such things although there were rumours about Fr. Patrick 'Patsy' Delaney !

I trust that there were regular knicker checks at Roundhay Girls School. You wouldn't by any chance have any photos of said knicker checks would you? ...Just for historical interest you understand.

Oh, my goodness! Those things take me right back! How we didn't melt in the summer I don't know - yes, we had the very same thick, navy blue knickers, and yes, they very nearly did come up to the armpits, didn't they!

"Happy" memories, Daphne. My mother always thought the dye would come off on our skin so we had to wear white knickers underneath as well.
Did you have to do "gym" in said underwear (no culottes allowed)? OK for the small girls - but for those whose "bloomers" were the size of a small tent... They were always looking for a way out.

Ahhh thank you all for your comments. YP - behave! - and Lucy, yes, we did gym in those and we also did a hideous thing called Greek Dance in baggy shiny blue knickers and short tunics. They were so very attractive.

I recall some years age there was a bit of an uproar over the disgraceful behaiour of young Brits abroad to which Mrs had this sage advice to offer:

"My wife has her own solution – brown zip-up cardigans. She says it is impossible to be debauched and abandoned in a brown zip-up cardigan and they should be compulsory wear for any Brit aged under thirty in Greece. That and big knickers!"

I think it was a pair like these she had in mind.

I think the 'Ladies of a Certain Age' at Roundhay School for Girls must have been related to those who were in charge of my school. They used the same trick to try keep adolescent girls and boys apart. Failed spectacularly, as the first love of my life and I proved! And the knickers were the same design, but a very unattractive shade of bottle/sage green. Absolutely hideous and avoided at all times after the 3rd year unless it was gym or games day. Ah the memories, thanks Daphne.

I have never made a comment about anyone's knickers and I don't intend to start now.

I have to admit that I never had a 'close encounter' with the garment under discussion;
but I do know, for a fact that girls wore whatever they liked under their skirts, and kept a pair of the 'regulation drawers' in their 'pump bag' for use during PE.
How do I know? I had a sister and a cousin who informed me of this practice. These regulation knickers were nearly always purchased from the Co-op in Birmingham and came in three colours - 'Bottle green', Navy blue and Ni**er Brown'.
Ahhhhhhh, those were the days. :)

If I'd been asked to describe this undergarment from memory, I'd have said the legs were longer and gathered with elastic. Maybe that was only in the south of England! Mine were definitely navy (tho' our gym slips were green.)

ROFL. My sister and I went to a Catholic girls' school in London and wore these. We hated the school dinners, and my sister devised a system whereby anything green (cabbage, sprouts, spinach etc.) ended up in the leg of her knickers! I'm really glad that my poor Mum got a (twin tub) washing machine quite early on! Perhaps that's why.

Ahhh, those were the days! Had I caught you wearing them it would have been triplets for us!

Personally, something untilitarian about good old fashioned full waisted school knickers does it for me.

Glad you kept them for posterity

I must be odd! I absolutely hated them at school like everyone. But now I am a lot older, I remember mine fondly! Is that weird??? It was that they were always warm and comfortable, not digging in or irritating somewhere. I wish they made them for adults.
It seems so ironic that normal ones are getting thinner and thinner, while I miss something so soft and thick. I swear mine were 1/4" thick!

Short back and sides on women is enforced as it makes them aggressive and verbally aggressive as well . I prefer short back and sides on women it makes them humble and they don't take drugs and I hate the feathercut hairstyle on anyone. Fashion? Yes but for bisexual women and men people who can love both sexes. . Bring back the shampoo and set for men aged 40 and forever. Colin colinnutley22@gmail.com
